Gordon H. Howatt, Jr.
Gordon H. Howatt, Jr., of New Britain, PA passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018, at Park Creek Place Assisted Living. He was 82.
Born in Wilkes Barre, PA, he was the son of the late Gordon H. and Mary Nagle Howatt.
Gordon served in the U.S. Army with the 8th Infantry as an Armor Crewman, where he earned a National Defense Service Medal, German Occupation Medal, as well as a Good Conduct Medal.
Gordon earned both his undergraduate (Accounting) and graduate (M.B.A.) degrees from the University of Delaware. For over 40 years he served as Vice President of Finance and/or Dean of Administration for numerous colleges and universities such as: The Peabody at Johns Hopkins University, Drury College, Catawba College, Chatham College, Salisbury State College, Bucks County Community College, Community College of Southern Nevada, and Ulster County Community College. He was one of the founding Deans at Raritan Valley Community College.
Education was very important to Gordon. He always stressed the importance of higher education to everyone he met, but especially to the young adults. He would always say, “It’s never too late to get your degree”, or to “go back to school for your graduate degree”.
Gordon was well known in the New Britain and Chalfont communities at the local grocery store, bank, hardware store, pharmacy and drycleaners. He was caring and generous, and always had a smile and a kind word to share, and was always there to help out a friend in need. He loved to read, sometimes devouring several books a week. He also loved playing the slot machines, buying lottery tickets, as well as a good scratch off lottery ticket.
Gordon is survived by his three sons Bradley Howatt (Stacey) of Timonium, MD, Derek Howatt (Kelly) of Grasonville, MD, Corey Howatt of Grasonville, MD, and his brother Robert Howatt (Dottie) of Wilmington, DE, and his 2 grandchildren Abigayle Dissinger (Eric) and Alexis Howatt.
He is also survived by his dear friend, Diane Scholl, as well as Adam, Holly, Logan and Grayson Scholl; and Kelly, Dan, Zachary, Sydney and Luke Thompson, all of New Britain.
At Gordon’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal period of visitation. Gordon loved the sunshine and warmer weather; therefore, his wishes were to have his ashes sprinkled in the Caribbean.
Gordon wanted to express gratitude to Ascend Hospice and Fox Chase Cancer Center, for their great kindness and compassion, and to all his friends and caregivers along the way who provided great care in such a pleasant manner.
