Robert J. “Bob” Mathews of Yardley passed away surrounded by his wife and family on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, Hamilton NJ. He had just turned 68.
Bob was the loving and devoted husband of 43 years to the love his life and his best friend’s sister, Cecelia “Ceil” Soweski Mathews.
A graduate of Bound Brook High School in New Jersey, Bob went on to be drafted by the United States Army and served proudly during Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1971. He later led a long career in the auto body business, most recently working as an auto body painter for Bill Flannery Automotive in Bensalem.
Bob was an avid sportsman stock car driver and enjoyed traveling to watch races with his family. He loved watching all types of racing, the Phillies, and Eagles and was proud to be a Philadelphia fan this past January. He also attended Phillies spring training every year and took the whole family along for the ride.
Perhaps most important to Bob’s wife and family are the memory of his sense of humor, the ease of which you could talk to him about anything at all and not be judged, and the fact that he was an undercover hopeless romantic, always recognizing special occasions for Ceil with the sweetest cards he could find. He will be dearly missed but his memory will be treasured by the countless people whose lives he’s touched.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children, Cheryl Seery (Justin), and Joseph Mathews (Kelly). He was also the beloved Pop-Pop to his granddaughter, Emilyn Seery who he adored deeply.
He also leaves behind brother, Harold Mathews (Debbie); his brothers-in-law, Robert Soweski (Diana) and Peter Soweski (Cecilia); his sisters-in-law, Sharon Sodon (Rich), Lynn Williams (Jack), and Catherine Kammerer (late John); and 14 nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Mathews (Karen).
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd., (at Holland Rd.), Richboro, PA 18954 and to his Funeral Mass on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Church of St. Andrew, 81 Swamp Rd., Newtown, PA 18940. His interment will follow in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1626 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.
