John Russel Dawson
John Russel (note one L) “Russ“ Dawson of New Hope, PA formerly of Vermont, Minnesota, and New Jersey, died on March 17, 2016 at home. He was 86 years old.
Born on March 23, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late John S. and Eldora (Russel) Dawson. He graduated from West Philadelphia High School and West Chester University (formerly Teachers College).
Russ served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Korea for over 16 months and he was proud of the Commendation medal he received when discharged. Upon graduation from college he married the Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Clevenstine. They were married for 65 years and had three daughters; Ann Hernick (Michael), Gail Cusack (Michael) and Mary Schwander (James), six grandchildren and one great grandson.
His career was in the paper manufacturing and distribution business with Scott Paper Company and Central Paper Company. Russ enjoyed traveling, having visited over 25 foreign countries, six of seven continents and 49 states.
One of his hobbies was reading obituaries and thus he wrote his own.
His Funeral Service and Interment with Military Honors will be held privately by the family in the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Doylestown Hospital Hospice, 875 N Easton Rd, Doylestown, PA 18902 or to Honor Flight, Inc., 300 E. Auburn Ave., Springfield, OH 45505-4703.
