Curwen S. Shelmire, of Doylestown, died peacefully on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Doylestown Hospital. He was 94.

He was the beloved husband of 69 years to the late Verna Leedom Shelmire who died in October of 2010. Born in Huntingdon Valley, he was the son of the late Ralph W. and Esther Cornell Shelmire; he was predeceased by his sister Grace Beuchler and brothers, James and Linford Shelmire.

Curwen was a resident of Heritage Towers in Doylestown since 1993. A farmer’s life was one of long hot days and short nights especially around harvest time. Curwen grew tomatoes and carrots for Campbell Soup, Co., on a farm in Ivyland that is now Spring Mill County Club, and in addition sold what he harvested on a Farm route that he maintained for many years. After the retirement of his father-in-law, Warner Leedom, Curwen and his wife Verna took over the poultry farm, which they operated for over 25 years. He continued his Farm route and added both the eggs and the chickens to the other fruits and vegetables that he sold.

He was a member of the Davisville Baptist Church; even though his free time was limited he loved his family and was devoted to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Curwen is survived by his devoted daughters and son-in-laws, Evelyn S. Vanderloo and her husband Robert of Delaware, Nancy S. Woodward and her husband William of Richboro, his 2 brothers, Clarence Shelmire of Pennsburg and Charles Shelmire of Horsham, 1 sister Elizabeth Bower of Richboro, 4 dear grandchildren: Linda, Terri, Robert and Scott and 5 great grandchildren: Michael, Steven, Bethany, Sydney, and Carter.

Relatives and residents of Heritage Towers, Doylestown are invited to attend his viewing on Friday, September 9, 2011, from 10:00 AM until his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Road (at Holland Road), Richboro.

Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Feasterville, PA. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory can be made to Doylestown Hospital 595 W. State St. Doylestown, PA 18901
