Condolences for
Alton L. Drummond

Saturday, February 9th | Comment by: Ric Caric

I knew Al Drummond mostly from my childhood and as someone who was almost entirely over my head as an athlete. Al was two years ahead of me in school and bigger, stronger, and much more coordinated than I was in my days as Ric Northrup. He was also a really nice even tempered guy (more even-tempered than me) and had an air of authority and decency about him. Two of my signal memories from childhood are hitting a triple off Al in Little League as the height of my baseball career and his ripping a rebound out of my hands as the surest indication of the limit of my basketball abilities. When I was 16, I was at the Gettysburg basketball camp when Al's scholarship at UVA was announced and followed Al's UVA career in the Waverly paper. I never met Al again, but always thought of him as a model of an intelligent, talented, and accomplished person. My condolences to his friends, family, and loved ones.

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of my childhood friend and teammate. Al and I played basketball together from elementary school through high school and he made all that time better as a friend and teammate. I am blessed that he was part of my life and memories of our times together will always bring a smile. To Rudy, Ty and family, Please accept my sincerest condolences. I am saddened by his passing but I will remember him frequently and fondly until I see him again.

I was honored to call Al a friend and brother. He was an incredible husband to my sister and Nuncle to my kids. He was always there when we needed him with encouragement and support. I'm so glad my grandkids also got to meet their Great Uncle. Love ya Al, it's time for you to rest.
