To the Scannelli kids,
It is with great sadness I type this. Your father was a man who provided many terrific memories for myself, and one who always made me laugh. The good moments are plentiful, and I'll share one here...
Watching your father play softball when we were kids was just awesome. No one I've ever seen play could hit a ball further to Rightfield than Tony. He has playing in a game with my Dad, and I was no older than 8. His first At Bat, he hit a Home Run fifty feet over the rightfielder's head. I excitedly asked him if he could hit it further, and he said, "You'll see". So at his next at bat, the rightfielder was playing him fifty feet further back than before, and Tony hits it fifty feet over his head for another Home Run. So the rightfielder at his next at bat plays him 50 feet further back than before. He then proceeeds to hit a third Home Run fifty feet over HIS head. It was unreal...36 years later I can still see the last ball traveling like a rocket, getting awfully small awfully fast.
As my memory recalls, he explained it to me as so:
"If I hit it as far as I could right off the bat, I can't hit any more homers because they'll be playing me too far back. This way I can hit homers all game."
I'm sure he is now in Heaven hitting homers, with your mom watching.
God Bless, and know that your Dad touched many lives in a positive way....mine for sure.
