Dear Mr. & Mrs. Gregory,

I am so sorry to hear about your son's death.

For a year, he lived across the hall from me at Bard college. He was very quiet, but we always said a cordial Hello to each other in the hallway.

He proved to be remarkably intelligent in a philosophy class on Spinoza we had together. For such a quiet guy, I was surprised to hear such articulate remarks come out of him in class.

I'm sorry I didn't get to know him better. I'm sure he was a great guy.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

sincerely,
Clark

Dear Chris, Jay and Lauren,
Chris' brother Eddie called me with the news that Steven had passed away. Glenda and I are heartbroken and I don't even know what to say about this tragedy. I regret that circumstances don't allow us to be at the service this evening. We're both praying for you and we pray our Lord and Savior reaches out and comforts you in your time of grief as only HE can.
All our Love and Prayers,
Joe and Glenda Stonecipher

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, and Lauren,

Today, a friend told me that Steven had passed. I am shocked and heartbroken at this news, and I regret that circumstances don't allow me to be at the service. I was Steven's roommate during his first year at Bard College. Steven was a dedicated young man and thinker who approached his studies, interests, and the world around him with passion. In my own memory of him, he was rarely (if ever) cynical--instead, he saw everything as if it was fresh, new, wondrous, and most importantly, open to a deeper understanding. Though he was often quiet, he always bristled with energy. When he talked, however, his voice quivered with excitement. When he typed his essays and poetry on his laptop (he typed standing), he studied, or he played chess with me, he did so with an inhuman focus. I wasn't the best roommate (often messy and sometimes rude), but he was always patient. Seeing Steven's side, all clean and organized, it was impossible to not feel the need to better yourself.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Through the love and strength you find in yourselves and in those that knew Steven, I hope that your memory of him grows fuller and that the spark he carried within him shines brighter.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, dear Lauren,
It was with great sadness that I learned of Steven's death. During his senior year at Council Rock South HS, he was in my Latin I class. His mature, quiet presence was a light in a large class of underclass students. As the year progressed, he asked me for additional Latin work to study on his own. I provided him with beginning college level mythology in Latin, which he found interesting and helpful. The following school year Lauren began her Latin studies as a freshman. Words are difficult at such a tragic time. Your family's strong faith in God will surely help you.
Very Sincerely, Linda Miller Seifried

your son was such and inspirational person. i was a fellow graduate of council rock south class of 2007, and Though i did not know him well, anyone in high school who observed him could not help but see the emanation of a profound presence of peace in all did.

The Beautiful Poet will be truly missed
