Pat began his legal career as a law clerk to Federal Judge John Morgan Davis. Thereafter he was a partner at Labrum & Doak. He was Chair of the Litigation Department at Cohen, Shapiro, Polisher, Shiekman & Cohen. In 1981 he founded the firm of Kittredge, Kaufman & Donley, which later became Kittredge, Donley, Elson, Fullem & Embick. Over the course of his career he handled a broad range of complex commercial litigation matters, as well as alternative dispute resolution cases, the defense of class actions and appellate proceedings. In 2008, Kittredge, Donley, Elson, Fullem & Embick merged with Thorp Reed & Armstrong, LLP, where he was Of Counsel until the time of his death.
Pat has been the President of the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania since 2004. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and served as the College’s State Chairman for Pennsylvania. He was a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers; and of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Kittredge has been a Permanent Member of the Judicial Conference of the Third Judicial Circuit since 1967, a Member of the American Arbitration Association’s Panel of Arbitrators, and a Member of the Penn Law Inn of Court. He was also an Adjunct Professor at Temple University School of Law for over 20 years.
Devoted to the University of Notre Dame and its mission, Pat was actively involved as an alumnus, first serving on the Alumni Board and joining and presently serving on the Advisory Council of the University of Notre Dame since 2004. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club of Philadelphia and was chosen Man of The Year in 1969.
Always an intense competitor, Pat was an avid and skilled golfer, at one time holding a six handicap. He had two holes-in-one to his credit. He was a member of Bala Golf Club, Overbrook Golf Club and Tavistock Country Club. He loved to travel the world with family and friends and relished each new adventure.
Pat is survived by his wife BJ, his children, Maureen, Patrick, Jr., Daniel, and Kevin Kittredge, and Alexandra (Sandy) Braine, five grandchildren, and brothers John, Thomas (Tim), and Francis, sister Kathleen Dower and two generations of adored nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Francis I. and Mary (Murphy) Kittredge and sisters Margaret Dolan and Mary Boyle. As the fourth of seven children, family, in all its forms, was most important to him. Whether Pat was in Avalon, NJ, Murrisk, County Mayo, Ireland or at home, family and friends always gathered.
In everything that he did, Pat’s singular purpose in life was to aid and care for those who needed help. He was their friend and advocate. He devoted his time and energy to assisting people, preserving their dignity and making sure they became valued members of our society. His word was his bond. Pat was fiercely loyal to those that he held dear, with a generous spirit and a love of life that touched all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
