Herman Francis Bohnhorst of Jamison, PA, formerly of Massapequa Park, New York, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne. He was 88 and the devoted husband of the late Doris Black Bohnhorst.

Barney, as his friends called him, grew up in Hempstead, NY, where he graduated from Hempstead High School. It was on Christmas Eve 1942, at the age of 19, that Barney received a telegram advising him to report for duty in two days to the US Navy Recruiting Station in New York City. He was stationed on the USS St. Louis as his first assignment, followed by the USS Yorktown, serving on both ships as the meteorologist. Throughout his service during World War II Barney received military commendations for his participation in several naval battles

After his tour of duty, he went to work at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he continued his career as a meteorologist. It was there that he met his bride-to-be, Doris Black, a medical laboratory technician. Doris and Barney married in 1950 in Amityville, NY and spent 61 happy years together, until Doris’ death on May 2, 2011.
Barney had a long and successful career connected to the US Navy, working for companies within the defense industry, including Sperry Gyroscope and Grumman Aerospace, as a quality control engineer. Barney was a dedicated employee and truly enjoyed his participation on a number of historical aviation projects, including the F14, the EA-6B, the E2, the Apollo missions, and the famous Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) program.

His pastimes included gardening, watercolor painting, and visits to Jones Beach with his family. Among his favorite activities were a number of aviation trips including the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, the Experimental Aircraft Association Exhibition in Oshkosh, WI, and the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Hempstead, NY.

Barney is survived by his two daughters, Carol Bohnhorst of Plainsboro, NJ and Gail Dubowe of Jamison, PA. He is also survived by two sisters, Mae Picone and Dorothy Kenny and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Thursday, June 28, 2012, from 9:30 AM until his Funeral Mass 10:00 AM at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church, 1410 Almshouse Road, Jamison, PA 18929.

Interment with military honors will take place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
