Helen Flynn Curry Stewart, formerly of Southampton NJ and most recently of Twining Village, Holland, PA passed away on Sept. 20, 2012 at St. Mary Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was 86.
Helen was the beloved wife of the late Elmer C. Stewart.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Carrie Cotter Flynn. After her mother’s death during the Great Depression, Helen was taken in at the age of 2 and raised by the Duff family on Wolf St. in South Philadelphia. Although Helen and her siblings where separated and raised by different families as a result of the difficult times, she fondly remembered her brothers Francis, Edward, Leo and William.
Helen attended elementary school at Saint Monica School, and graduated from the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School. Helen’s first marriage brought forth three cherished sons, whom she lovingly raised as a single mother. For many years she worked and supported her family on her own, and faced the difficult times with a calm assurance and embraced the good times with the vivaciousness and verve that she will be remembered for.
Helen held several places of employment throughout her life in Philadelphia, and retired from Cutler Egg Products as a bookkeeper. In her journals, she said that her favorite job was working as a teenager at the Armory Cafeteria waiting on the soldiers. After her marriage to Elmer, they lived in Leisuretown in Southampton NJ for 15 years. They fully embraced their later years together and were often out on the town, indulging Helen’s love of dancing. Helen and Elmer enjoyed over 20 years of marriage before his passing in 2002.
Mrs. Stewart was an attendee of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem Church on Sundays, and could often be seen at weekday mass at Twining Village. She loved to sing throughout her life, and continued to do so in her later years.
She is survived by her son: Thomas F. Curry, and his wife Karen of Jamison; and her grandsons: Thomas J. and Austin D. Curry. Helen was preceded in death by her sons William P. Curry and John E. Curry; her brothers: Francis, Edward, Leo and William Flynn; and her beloved Austin, Marie, and Elizabeth Duff.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until her Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Road (at Holland Road), Richboro, PA 18940.
Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
