Robert J. Kane, DO of Newtown, PA died peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Chandler Hall Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years old.

Dr. Kane was married for 52 years to the love of his life, Kathleen R. Egan Kane until her death in 2004.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Esther M. Dwyer Kane.

Dr. Kane attended St. Ambrose Catholic School in Northeast Philadelphia and graduated from St. Joseph’s Prep in 1942. During World War II, he served as a naval officer in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return, Robert enrolled in Villanova University and graduated in 1954. He received his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine in 1958 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy. He started a family practice in the Kensington section of Philadelphia in 1959 and moved to Somerton in 1961 with his family, There he opened a medical office in the basement of his home on Lindsay Street where he took care of patients in the community as a family practitioner until his retirement. In addition, he was on staff at Parkview and John F. Kennedy Hospitals, as well as Holy Redeemer and St. Mary Medical Center. He was board certified in General Practice, Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery, and Geriatrics. Dr. Kane served as Medical Director of Mayo Nursing Home, where he was remembered for his dedication, skill and compassion. He had wanted to be a physician and take care of others from childhood, a passion that remained constant until he died at age 90.

He had a voracious appetite for knowledge and could always be found with 4 or 5 books by his side. In his rare “free” time, he enjoyed playing golf or watching a good football game but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Robert is survived by his loving children; Michael J Kane of Delaware County, PA, Gerald P. Kane and his wife, Maryellen of Philadelphia, PA, Dennis Kane of Philadelphia, PA, Maria Kane Rothstein and her husband, Kenneth of Upper Holland, PA, and Karen Jane Kane of Philadelphia.
