Gino Angelo Lioy was born April 23, 1924 in Altoona, PA to Italian immigrant parents Rosalina Spinazzola and Donato Lioy. He passed away Good Friday, March 29, 2013, peacefully at his home in Buckingham Springs, PA, during the celebration of our Lord’s Passion and Death. Gene was 3 weeks shy of his 89th birthday.

He was the loving husband of Henrietta D’Angelo Lioy to whom he was married 61 years. His three living brothers, John, Joseph and Daniel and one sister, Nettie survive his late brother Thomas Lioy.

After high school at age 19, “Gene” entered WWII as an Air force mechanic and top turret gunner on the Flying Fortress-B-17 bomber in the 544th Bomb Squadron of the 384th Bomb Group. He trained as an airplane mechanic, attending engineering school in Oklahoma and worked briefly at a Boeing Aircraft plant. He remained in the Air force for over 2 years flying missions over France and Germany. He received 2 Air Medals, a Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and 5 Bronze Stars.

After the war in 1951, Gene married Henrietta and they lived in the Bronx, NY for over 7 years. He entered the printing business where he worked in New York City for over 30 years as a master printer. Ultimately, they settled in Clifton, NJ where they lived for the next 32 years. They raised 2 children, Janet and Linda. Gene was an avid golfer and loving husband and father and fixed everyone’s cars in the neighborhood.

In 2000, Gene and Henrietta moved to Buckingham Springs where they lived a full active retirement life with all their wonderful new friends and neighbors. Gene loved playing golf, cards, baci, going to Atlantic City on the bus trips and going to the clubhouse participating in all the activities.

He is survived by his wife Henrietta of 61 years and 2 loving daughters, Upper Makefield resident-Janet Lioy, M.D. a Children’s Hospital physician and her husband Peter Greubel, and Registered Nurse-Linda Lioy-Bsales of Wayne, NJ and her husband David Bsales. His 6 grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth, Christopher, Jackie, Eric and Jamie will miss him dearly as they shared fond memories of him playing golf, cards, and sharing endless Sunday dinners together.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Friday, April 5, 2013, from 10:00 AM until his Funeral Mass 12:00 Noon at The Church of Saint Andrew, 81 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA 18940. Interment with military honors will take place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
