Katherine A. Margerum, of Buckingham, PA died Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Arbors at Buck Run, Feasterville. She was 87 years old.
Kay was born March 6, 1926, in Philadelphia, and was the daughter of the late Edwin P. and Helena Alexander Margerum, Sr., and sister of the late Edwin P. Margerum, Jr. and William B. Margerum IV. She is survived by sister-in-Law, Elizabeth Margerum and niece Patricia Margerum.
Kay graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1944, West Chester State Teachers College in 1948 with honors, and received her Master Degree of Education in Physical Education, Health, and Psychology from Temple University. After graduation, Kay taught at West Chester University and Abington School district for 35 years; retiring in 1983.
Kay had a passion for learning, teaching, and leadership, which was evidenced by her many honors, awards, and organization memberships. She received the One Hundred Club Award for Excellence in Athletics and Scholarship, where one student from each of Philadelphia’s 16 high schools was honored. The American Legion School Award for courage, character, service, companionship and scholarship. She also coached multiple sports including hockey, basketball, softball, and synchronized swimming. Upon her retirement, the Senate of Pennsylvania honored her for her overall contributions to Physical Education and the student teaching experience.
Kay enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and traveling the world with her long- time companion, Patricia Elliott. Their travels also included annual trips to Jost Van Dyke, BVI, Somers Point, NJ, Canada, and their favorite island cottage in Nantucket, which they called Brigadune.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 9:45 am until her funeral service at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Trinity Episcopal Church of Buckingham, 2631 Durham Rd., Buckingham, PA 18912. Her interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, at the above address.
