James D. Mahoney of New Hope, died peacefully on Thursday October 9, 2014, at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He was 67.
James was a Vietnam War Veteran who served proudly in the Army. He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and winner of the prestigious William Emlen Cresson Prize, which allowed him to travel to the major art museums of Europe for additional study. After serving as a conservationist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he went on to co-found the Painting Conservation of Philadelphia. During his career he restored paintings in a number of major collections including French Impressionist works by Matisse, Renoir, Cezanne and Van Gogh in the Barnes collection, the murals in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington D.C. (John Trumbull 1826), and countless other masterpieces including “Death on a Pale Horse” (Benjamin West 1817),“The Gross Clinic” (Thomas Eakins 1875) as well numerous private collections. He enjoyed the great outdoors, hiking, camping, fishing and restoring antique cars.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John and Mary Roe Mahoney and brother-in-law of the late Irene Mahoney.
James is survived by his loving daughters; Karen Mahoney of Tulum, Mexico and Christine Mahoney of Charlottesville, VA and their mother Ann Holt Mahoney. He is also survived by his companion Charlene Aikman, his brothers John J. Mahoney, Robert T. Mahoney (Judith), his sister Janet Ciliberti (Carmen), numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
James’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 15th from 9:00 am until his Memorial Service 10:00 am in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro, PA 18954.
Interment will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
