Joseph E. Gerber of Newtown died Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Chandler Hall Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was 92.
Joseph was the beloved husband of 71 years to Helen M. Welsh Gerber.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Veronica Barefoot Gerber, brother of the late Agatha and Anna Nelms, grandfather of the late Noah Gerber and great grandfather of the late Tyre Hicks.
Joseph was a former resident of Somerton section of Philadelphia before moving to Holland in 1979 and eventually moved to Newtown in 1993. He was a former Communicant of St. Christopher’s Church in Philadelphia and was a longtime and faithful Communicant of the Church of St. Andrew in Newtown. He was Police Officer for 26 years with the Philadelphia Police Department until he retired with the rank of Lieutenant. Joseph was a veteran of the US Army serving in the 5th Army during World War II and was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, St. Katharine Drexel Council 3968 in Philadelphia. He was an honorable family man and enjoyed quality times with his family especially in North Cape May, New Jersey. He will be deeply missed by his family and by all who came to know him.
In addition to his beloved wife Helen, Joseph is survived by his children and their spouses, Joseph E. Gerber Jr. and his wife Patricia of Springfield, Virginia, Edward J. Gerber, Robert J. Gerber of West Palm Beach, Florida and Mark J. Gerber and his wife Maureen of Newtown and his daughter-in-law Carol Drea Gerber. He is also survived by his sister Lillian Raego of Warminster, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewings, Friday October 11th from 7:00-9:00pm and on Saturday October 12th from 10:00am until his Funeral Mass 11:00am at the Olde Church of St. Andrew, 131 Sycamore Street, Newtown, PA 18940. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Chandler Hall Hospice, 99 Barclay St., Newtown, PA 18940.
