Stephen S. Makgill passed away peacefully January 27, 2019 at his home in Newtown, PA. He was 89 years old. Stephen was the beloved husband of 63 years to Joan Woods Makgill.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Stephen graduated from the University of Michigan. He worked at The Travelers Companies in Hartford, CT for 20 years, during which time he lived with his wife and family in Windsor, CT. and became a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.  He and his family moved to Berwyn, PA when he became President of the Pennsylvania and Delaware Compensation Rating Bureaus. After his retirement in 1989 Steve and Joan moved to Fripp Island, SC where they spent 27 years in happy retirement.  They loved to travel, play golf and tennis, and Steve loved to fish. They were also able to visit family and friends in New Zealand often.  In 2017 they moved to Cary, NC and lived at Woodland Terrace for a year and a half before moving to Chandler Hall in Newtown, PA.

In addition to his devoted wife, Stephen is survived by his four loving children: Kathleen Makgill & husband Greg Sisk of Malaga, Spain, Stephen, Makgill,  Jr. & wife Kelly of Zebulon, NC, Heather & husband William Lyon of New Hope, PA, and Allison Makgill & husband Trevor Giles of Cheltenham, England. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and his older brother David Makgill of Waiuku, New Zealand.

A celebration of Stephen’s life will be held at a later date.
