Gregory Kopenhaver, Sr. of Southampton, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final weeks. He was 67 years old.
Greg will be heavily missed by his true love of 49 years, Trudy (Schaeffer) Kopenhaver.
Born in Abington, he was the son of Edith Kopenhaver and the late Harold Kopenhaver. He was a retired Philadelphia police officer who operated the family painting business that was started with his father. He also owned and managed various rental properties which kept him busy and active in his later years.
Greg had an outgoing personality and loved meeting people. He spent most of his time on Long Beach Island where he was seen “patrolling” his Brant Beach neighborhood, making friends and checking on neighbors. Local residents referred to him as the “Mayor of Brant Beach”. He was proactive in the community and was a common fixture at the local township building and meetings where he was the self-described “squeaky wheel”. Because of his continued involvement, the township recently dedicated a neighborhood beautification project in his honor and named it the Kopenhaver Promenade! This was truly a special moment for him.
Greg’s biggest passion was his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at the shore, and was always available to “supervise” any family activities or projects. He also enjoyed fishing and spent many weekends on the boat with his son and grandsons chasing striped bass and various species along the coast. He and Trudy enjoyed time at their bay house, eating out at local restaurants and the “occasional” trip to the casinos.
In addition to his loving wife Trudy, he is survived by his mother, Edith Kopenhaver; his siblings, Brent Kopenhaver and his wife Emilie, LuAnn Vanaman and her husband Olin, Thomas Hartzell and his wife, Barbara; his children, Gregory Kopenhaver, Jr. and his wife Lori, Kimberly Rothstein and her husband, Michael; and his grandchildren, Madison, Michael, Gregory and Matthew.
Greg’s family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 11:00am until his Life Tribute at 12:30pm, at the Joseph A. Fluehr, III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown Richboro Rd., Richboro, PA 18954. A luncheon will follow. His interment will take place privately.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, PO Box 1000; Dept. 147 in Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
