Harry J. Klein, of Doylestown, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Pine Run Health Care, Doylestown. He was 92.
He was the beloved husband of 63 years to Rita M. Domina Klein. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the devoted son of the late Harry and Helen Klein.
Harry grew up in the Depression era and, upon completion of high school, entered the United States Navy. He was a proud veteran of World War II, serving on a submarine in the Pacific Theatre. After his military service, he took full advantage of the GI bill to earn his undergraduate and masters degrees from Duquesne University and his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.
Harry’s career in education spanned thirty-five (35) years. After graduation from Duquesne, he taught for several years at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. He also taught English and then served as a counselor at Baldwin-Whitehall High School in Pittsburgh.
In 1967, Harry moved to Doylestown to become the Director of Pupil Services in the Central Bucks School District. As part of that role, he was responsible for the delivery of special education to students along with supporting teachers, counselors, psychologists and social workers. In 1982, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools in the New Hope-Solebury School District. He served the New Hope Solebury School Community until his retirement in 1988. In retirement he served as an Adjunct Professor at LaSalle University for 6 years passing on his knowledge to school administration and student teachers.
Harry was a man of many talents. He taught a course in Ethics at the Center for Learning in Retirement at Delaware Valley University. He was an avid reader and a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court. He also looked forward to working in the yard and tending to his roses. More than anything, however, Harry loved to spend time with his twelve (12) grandchildren – including attending countless sporting events and school performances. He also excelled in competitive games of family kickball.
In addition to his beloved wife Rita, he is survived by a sister, Betty Moser and a brother, John Klein. He is also survived by his devoted children and their spouses including his son, Mark J. Klein and his wife Diane, Gail Norris and her husband Michael, Jill Schweizer, Matthew Klein and his wife Laura and John Klein and his wife Janine. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren.
From humble beginnings, Harry Klein served our country, earned advanced degrees from Duquesne and University of Pittsburgh and positively influenced countless youth through his work as a teacher and school administrator. He was a man of the highest integrity and deep kindness. He possessed a quick wit, shared throughout his days. Above all of his accomplishments and admired traits, he will be best remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and the proudest of grandfathers.
Harry’s family will receive condolences on Wednesday December 26, from 9:30am until his Funeral Mass 11:00am at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church 1410 Almshouse Rd. Jamison. Interment will follow in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.
