Lawrence C. Tholey, Sr. of Newtown passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at age 95, with his family by his side. Larry, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late John and Catherine Hicking Tholey. He was the devoted husband of the late Violet Sheak Tholey, to whom he was married for 65 wonderful years. He’ll be remembered by his family and many friends for his quick wit, his friendly smile, and for always having a kind word for everyone he met.
Larry was a 1940 graduate of North Catholic High School, after which he attended Strayer Business School. Larry served in the US Army Office of Strategic Services from 1943 to 1946, and for the rest of his life was a proud Veteran and member of the American Legion. Larry spent his entire career at the Philadelphia Coke Company, working as an accountant for 42 years.
Larry’s hobbies were bowling and golf, and he loved playing cards, board games, and bocce. His life centered on his family, and his large family gatherings were a lifelong source of joy. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed their yearly family trips to Sea Isle City.
Larry was a communicant of the Church of St. Andrew for 41 years, where he was a Parish Ambassador, an usher, and an Extraordinary Minister. Larry had a strong faith and a committed devotion to the Lord, and was a Fourth Degree Member of the Raymond V. Hennessy Council of the Knights of Columbus. Prior to moving to Newtown, Larry enjoyed many years living in the Oxford Circle, where he was a board member and coach of the Summerdale Boys Club and an active member of St. Martin of Tours Church.
Larry is survived by his children: Patricia Monahan, and her husband Dennis of Richboro, JoAnn Ryan, and her husband Peter of Huntingdon Valley, Lawrence C. Tholey, Jr., and his wife Patricia of Holland, Mary Beth DiRenzo, and her husband Samuel of Newtown, and Kathy Morrison, and her husband Thomas of Newtown. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 11:00am until his Funeral Mass at 12:30pm, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 81 Swamp Rd., Newtown. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
