Ellen McLoone of Glenside passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5, 2018 at her home. She was 69.
Ellen was the beloved wife of Peter J. McLoone. They were lucky to catch each other and shared 47 years of life, love, and family together.
Born and raised in Wissinoming (Philadelphia), she was the daughter of the late James J. and Rita (nee Mastropietro) DeHaven. Ellen was a graduate of St. Hubert’s High School and was extremely proud to be have been a “Bambi”. It was during this time that she found her love of singing, something she continued to do for much of her life. She went on to attend Holy Family College and later was a teacher for the Ascension of Our Lord Parish School in Kensington.
As she and Peter continued to grow their family, they settled down in Glenside, a place they and their family loved to call home, and “Glenside Pride” continues to shine in their hearts no matter where they go. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Luke the Evangelist Church where she also volunteered much of her time between the school and Parish. Her long list of hats included helping with numerous Christmas Bazaars, Spaghetti Dinners, Summer Stock Shows, the Home & School Association, and countless trips to Philadelphia to feed the homeless, just to name a few. She also served as a CCD teacher for many years and assisted with the school’s forensics team. As her children grew into High School, she was active in the communities of St. Joseph’s Preparatory Seminary in Princeton, NJ, and Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote. She was extremely proud to be a part of the Royal Masque family at McDevitt where her knack for theatrical makeup shined. When her daughters competed away from home as part of the Cassidy Dance Studio, she served as “dorm” Mom, helping with dress and makeup, meals and drinks, and generous helpings of encouragement.
Clearly, being involved in her children’s lives was of utmost importance to her, and she took great pride not only in their accomplishments but also those of their friends. She beamed with pride watching all of the special kids in her life grow into adults. All these many activities put countless miles on several of her beloved station wagons over the years, and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. Ellen was also known to many as “STARTCH” the clown, a name she created as a combination of her children’s names. She volunteered her time with The Everywoman’s Club of Glenside where she served as auctioneer at its annual charity auction. She was a past president of the Women’s Center of Montgomery County and was passionate about her work to help and protect victims of domestic abuse. She also led the Domestic Violence Project. Additionally, she served as President of S.P.I.R.I.T. (Support Police Immediate Response Intervention Team) aiding the Abington, Upper Moreland and Jenkintown Police Departments, which allowed her yet another outlet to help those in need during sensitive and difficult situations.
Above all else, Ellen’s favorite thing in the world was her family. She lit up at the chance to share what her kids and grandkids were up to and how proud she was of each and every one of them, their accomplishments, and the lives they built for themselves. Family gatherings were by far her favorite; the louder the better. Her grandkids, most especially, were her world, and her love for them was without measure.
Ellen truly lived the virtues of kindness, empathy, compassion, and acceptance and instilled them in her children and grandchildren. She gave of her love freely and without reservation. Words cannot say how much her warmth, love, quirks, and irreverent sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband, Ellen is survived by her children, Chris (Jennifer), Susan Murray (Tom), Tara Gibble, and Tim McLoone (Michael Morales), whose company she greatly enjoyed—even when they were teenagers. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Owen, Sean, and Ian McLoone; Thomas Murray; and Morgan and Sadie Gibble (and their father, Ben Gibble); her sister, Mary DeHaven; her brother and sister-in-law, Michael & Maureen McLoone; and her nieces and nephews, Megan Cahill (Raj) and Siobhan Cahill and Andrew McLoone (Melissa) and Peter McLoone. She also leaves behind countless cousins, relatives, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James J. DeHaven, and Rosemarie DeHaven.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Monday, October 8, 2018 from 6:00-8:00PM at the William R. May Funeral Home, 354 N. Easton Rd., Glenside, PA 19038 and at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 2316 Fairhill Ave., Glenside, PA 19038 on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 9:30AM until 10:15AM, followed by her Funeral Mass at 10:30AM. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
