Derek William Wankum of Doylestown, PA passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018. He will remain forever young at age 20.
Derek is the beloved son of Robert and Teresa Wankum and the dear grandson of Edward and Rita Lambacher and Roman and LaVon Wankum. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Derek is survived by his loving sisters, Alexa Alizoti and her husband Gerti and Janelle Wankum. He is also survived by his nephew Enzo, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends spanning the Country, from California to Boston.
Derek attended Doyle Elementary, Lenape Middle School, Central Bucks High School West and graduated with honors from San Pedro Valley Academy in 2016. A natural athlete and a loyal teammate to many, he especially enjoyed football, lacrosse and basketball.
Derek spent his youth hunting, fishing and spending time in nature with family and friends. His life was an adventure in the making as he fell in love with horseback riding in Arizona, and hiking in the great outdoors, ultimately accomplishing the climb of a lifetime, scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at just 18 years-old.
Wherever his path led, Derek always took time to connect with those around him. He loved preparing memorable meals reminiscent of his journey from Philadelphia to his work in many kitchens along the way. Jamming to music with his friends was an all-time favorite. His goofy humor, genuine kindness and “the best smile ever” enveloped friends, old and new. And, he recognized how different, special and pure kids are, which was always evident, no matter where he traveled. He befriended many and always stuck up for kids who were being bullied.
Following his travels, he returned to Philadelphia and this past year, he delighted in the Eagles Super Bowl win after attending the NFC championship game with his Dad. His easy nature, coupled with natural confidence, served him well as he pursued his musical passion as a highly creative and talented song writer that regularly performed on stages all over the Philadelphia area. He was always the life of the party.
Derek’s strength, humility and exuberance serves as a lasting inspiration to his family and friends. He lived life fast, accomplishing so much, and in search of his own peace. His valiant journey and deep-rooted goodness are a lifelong beacon for those that loved him. Derek is blessed with a loving family and many loyal and lifelong friends.
Derek’s Celebration of Life service begins at 10:30am on July 1st at Normandy Farm in Bluebell, PA, followed by a reception.
