Linda L. Carothers of in North Wales died peacefully on May 13th at her home surrounded by many family and friends after a brief and heroic battle against cancer. She was 71.
Born in Philadelphia, Linda was the loving life-partner of Deborah Mundy for the past 28 years. She was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Hackett) Carothers. Linda was predeceased by her parents, her brother William, and her sister Anna.
Linda graduated from Frankford High School, where she developed her skills as a softball player. After school, she moved to California where she played professionally for the Bakersfield Aggies and the San Bernardino Gems. Moving back to Philadelphia, Linda coached women’s softball at the University of Pennsylvania for 23 years, 1974 – 1997, where she coached the team to their first Ivy League championship. Linda was also active in the local chapter of the American Softball Association and worked with many youth teams in Philadelphia. Linda was inducted into the Philadelphia Softball Hall of Fame in 1996.
In retirement, Linda enjoyed traveling, gardening, and golf. She was especially devoted to her summer house in Surf City, Long Beach Island at the Jersey shore, where she and Debbie hosted family and friends all year long.
In addition to her life-partner, Linda is survived by her brother, Edward Carothers Jr. (Patti), her sisters Jan Fioravanti (Rose Izzi) and Dorene Vandiver her brother-in -law Jim Mundy (Rene), Michael (Donna), Mark, Matthew (Sheila),sister -in law Maureen (Shelley) and many nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews and a great-great nephew.
Linda’s family will receive relatives and friends, Friday, May 18, 2018 from 9:00 am until her Funeral Service 11:00 am, at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 East Butler Ave. (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901. Her interment will follow in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s memory may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the Center for Creative Works.
