James Malone of Doylestown passed away unexpectedly on January 25.
James was the husband of Anna Malone.
Born in Philadelphia, March 9th 1952, he was the son of Marie Malone Street and the late John J. Malone.
Jim was a graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School (1970) in East Oak Lane and The University of Dayton (1975) (BSEE). Trained as an Electrical Engineer, Jim found his passion working in the television broadcast industry and with the microwave transmission equipment that facilitates live broadcasts of newsworthy events. Starting at KYW-TV and then spending 13 years at WCAU in Philadelphia, Jim’s entrepreneurial fervor ultimately took hold. In 1991, Jim was a founder of Total RF, one of the first companies offering technology to TV stations and networks that gave them an unsurpassed ability to cover breaking news and sports. A globally recognized industry visionary and the undisputed grand master of the application of wireless technology to the art of broadcast production, Jim and Total RF were presented nine Emmy Awards over the years for Technology Innovation and Production Excellence. His energy, enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge set the standard for the use of these emerging technologies. Jim was sought out by networks, national broadcasters and global event organizations to help deliver live coverage of the largest and most complex events. Jim and his expertise were an integral part of many of the most watched television sports coverage of the past three decades, including all of the Olympics coverage since 1994, the New York and Boston Marathons and countless PGA, NFL, NBA, MLB and College Football games. Jim’s influence is readily apparent in how televised coverage is now provided in many events but in particular the broadcast coverage of marathons, cycling and golf. An early and vocal promoter of the use of digital systems in concert with the microwave transmission of video, Jim’s life work and enthusiastic advocacy of this technology paved the way for the high definition live sports broadcasts that are now the norm. A lifelong HAM radio enthusiast and operator (WA3LBI) he was an important part of the national network of radio “first responders”. In recent years, Jim had pioneered the development of software defined radios and camera systems using cellular technology to deliver HD and ultra-high definition video.
In addition to his wife Anna and his mother Marie, he is survived by his children Shannon Malone, Erin Malone, Justin Malone and Tara Malone as well as stepchildren Kasia Parker and Greg Buczkiewicz and brothers John Malone and Steven Malone.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Thursday, February 1st from 9:00 – 11:00AM in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 E. Butler Avenue (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901 and to his Funeral Mass at 12:30 at St. Anne’ Chapel of the Shrine of Our Lady Czestochowa, 654 Ferry Road, Doylestown, PA 18901.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Sports Broadcasting Fund http://www.sportsvideo.org/sports-bcast-fund/.
