Monica C. McCourt (nee Feeney), better known as Connie died peacefully on Sept. 8, 2017 at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia, surrounded by her family. She was 76 years old.
She was the beloved wife of Thomas J. McCourt, Jr. for 45 years prior to his passing in 2004.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Monica Clark Feeney. She was preceded in death by her sister Catherine “Honey”, and brothers Peter and Patrick “Buddy”.
Monica was a 1958 graduate of Hallahan Catholic High School where she enjoyed performing in school plays. In 1959 she married the love of her life, Tom McCourt. They went on to have five children and 11 grandchildren. She worked several jobs, her favorite being in the payroll office of Sears Roebuck, which allowed her to obtain many bargains for her family at the employee outlet store. She spent most of her years as a homemaker and very proud and devoted mother and grandmother. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandkids. She loved teaching them from a very young age and both the kids and “Gmom” were sad as they each graduated from Grandmom School to attend pre-K. Monica left her kids and grandkids with many life lessons and pearls of wisdom. She was a firm believer in “old wives tales”, teaching her brood that “what falls to the floor comes to the door” and “mocking is catchy”. Never speak ill of someone; instead, pray for their soul. Forgive often. She loved striking up conversations with random people she didn’t know but considered prospective friends. Monica was a woman of strong faith who prayed often for everyone, both living and deceased.
Family and friends were Monica’s passion and delight. She loved to entertain, often hosting family gatherings and events. Her home was always open to everyone and she thoroughly enjoyed visitors. However, after you had been there once or twice she would say you were no longer company, which basically meant you should not wait for her to offer you refreshments but, rather, help yourself. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. Monica was often playing pranks on family members and loved her box full of fake lottery tickets, flying monkeys and whoopee cushions. She was a very generous woman who loved to shop and could not pass up a bargain. She always had a stockpile on hand of extra items to share and her motto was “someone can always use it”. Monica would regularly go out of her way to make people smile. The world was definitely a better place with her in it.
She is survived by her loving children, Thomas M. McCourt, Cynthia McCourt (Dante), Karen Harris (Robert), Micki Ramos (Carlos) and Kevin McCourt; her beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Bobby, Alex, Maeve, Tommy, Samantha, Aidan, Tommy, Danny, Nick and Alex; her brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Myra Feeney and many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to list but not forgotten.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing, Wednesday from 6-8pm at the Joseph A. Fluehr, III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro, and visitation on Thursday from 9:30-10:15am at St. Christopher Church,13301 Proctor Road Philadelphia, PA 19116. Her Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Poor Clare Sisters, 1271 Langhorne-Newtown Rd. Langhorne, PA 19047.
