Louis F. Spadaccino, of Holland, died peacefully on Thursday, April 3, at his home. He was 90.
Lou was born and raised in Woodbourne (Langhorne), PA and was the 6th child of 9 children born to Maria and Angelo Spadaccino. He was preceded by his wife Martha Furner Spadaccino in 1992, his son David in 2012, 5 brothers and one sister. Lou has been resident of Holland for the past 54 years living in a home that he built in 1960.
In his senior year at Langhorne Middletown High School (now Neshaminy High School), Lou took his final exams early and left to join the Navy, not to see the world but to fight for his country in World War II. Lou was a gunner's mate on LCI 489 and together with his fellow naval crew mates was active in bringing in the first wave of troops to Normandy at the Battle of Omaha Beach. Lou spent 3 years in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. After a short time at home he joined the Joey Chitwood Thrill Show.
Lou performed many different stunts while travelling throughout the county with the Thrill Show but was best know for riding a motorcycle through a hoop of fire.
One of Lou's greatest gifts in life was his knowledge and ability to work in the surveying field. His first job at the age of 14 was for Edward Pickering Surveying and Engineering. After leaving the Chitwood Thrill Show, Lou again returned to the surveying field and took a position with what later became known as Pickering, Corts & Summerson where he worked till 1959.
Lou was very active with a variety of sports teams and was an original founder of the Council Rock Little League Baseball Team. One of the little league teams he managed went undefeated, and one bit of information not known to many was that every time the team won Lou took them to Goodnoe’s Ice Cream Parlor and treated the entire team to ice cream.
In 1959 Lou decided to leave Pickering, Corts & Summerson and started his own Engineering and Surveying Company which he named Tri-State Engineers and Land Surveyors. After 55 years, Tri-State Engineers is still operating at its current location on Street Road in Feasterville under the guidance and leadership of Lou.
In 1978, Lou decided he wanted to expand his horizons and built a Health Club and Racquetball Club on property he owned in Feasterville. After many months of planning the B&R Health Club was opened. Lou had a very active role in running the Health Club until he turned the club over to his son David who managed it till his death in 2012.
In addition to the above accomplishments, Lou was a very active golfer joining Torresdale Frankford Country Club in 1976 where he served on the Board of Governors and on many committees, including Greens Chairman for 12 years and President for 4 years.
If you knew Lou, you were well aware of the fact that he was a great hunter, traveling throughout most of the United States and many countries overseas including the Arctic, British Columbia, and Canada.
Who could forget that Lou also enjoyed fishing? His greatest enjoyment came from fly fishing in Alaska, Canada and Iceland.
Although Lou truly enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing, his greatest love was his family. For 10 years, he hosted the Spadaccino Family Reunion. The reunion was always held around Christmas time when the family could get together to share some of the past year’s happenings and enjoy the children seeing Santa Clause.
In addition to all of the above, Lou was also actively involved with the Bucks County Republican Party, contributing to and attending a great number of fund raisers.
Lou was a member of the Bristol Elks, PA Lodge No. 970, and the Grand Lodge of PA, The Feasterville Business Persons Association and he was a founding member of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors.
Lou is survived by his son, Michael Spadaccino, 3 grandchildren; Danielle Palermo and her husband Anthony, Cody Spadaccino and his wife Beth, and Taylor Leigh Spadaccino and soon to be great grandfather of two. He is also survived by a sister, Eleanor Sands, and a brother, Leo Spadaccino and 2 sisters-in-law, Adelaide “Dell” and Carol Spadaccino and his dear friend and companion of 17 years, Patricia Murray.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewings on Monday evening, April 7, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Tuesday morning from 8:15am to 9:15 am in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Road (at Holland Rd.) Richboro, and to his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Road, Holland, PA 18966.
Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
