Douglas Sherman Morgan ‘60

          Douglas Morgan passed away on June 30, 2017 in Ambler, PA.

          Doug was born in Mt. Carmel, PA on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1935. He was 81 years old. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1953, where he played quarterback and cornerback for the successful football “Red Tornadoes” of 1952. Doug ran for three touchdowns and passed for two, achieving a team record of 9 wins, 2 losses.

          He then attended Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in Lancaster, PA, studying architectural drafting. During his time at Stevens, he again played quarterback and defensive back for the football team with a record of 9 wins, 1 loss.

          He joined the US Army in March 1954 and spent 1 ¾ years in Aschaffenburg, Germany before returning to the States to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, Maryland. He entered the US Naval Academy in 1956 with the class of 1960.  Upon graduation, he received a commission in the US Army Artillery as a second lieutenant. Doug then went to parachute training, earning jump wings, then on to Fort Sill and Fort Bliss for artillery and missile training. After four years in the US army, three of which were served in Augsburg, Germany, he resigned his commission as a captain at Fort Benning, Georgia, with the 11th Air Assault Division and received an honorable discharge.

          He entered civilian life, first as a turn supervisor with US Steel, then changed careers to the pharmaceutical industry with Vicks, Bard, Rorer, and finally ending his 33 year career in 1999 with Wyeth Laboratories in Radnor, PA

          He married the love of his life, Margaret “Peg” Tafe from Philadelphia and lived in Upper Dublin Township, PA for the past 31 years. Peg and Doug operated Riptide East (Home of the College Jams) in Stone Harbor, Ocean City, and Peddlers Village.

          In addition to his wife, Doug is survived by his son Michael Morgan and his wife Dana, his Step-Daughter Donna Marie Santoro and her husband Christopher.  He is also survived by his dear grandchildren: Alex, Matthew, and Alec and his brothers Lewis and Frank Morgan

          Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 10:30am until his Funeral Mass at 11:30am in St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Rd, Holland, PA 18966.  Interment with Military Funeral Honors will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675
