Thelma J. Walker Tanner, of Atlanta, GA died peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2017, at her home with family at her bedside. She was 89.
Born in Philadelphia, Thelma was the beloved wife of 58 years to the late Edwin Tanner, daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Godfrey Walker and sister of the late Emma Worthington, Mary Stemme, William Walker and Benjamin Walker.
Thelma lived most of her life in Richboro, moving to Quakertown in 2008 and eventually to Atlanta in 2012. She graduated from Richboro High School (now Council Rock H S.) class of 1945, and played softball and field hockey. In 1947 she married the love of her life Edwin Tanner at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Newtown, and the rest is history.
Thelma was a founding member of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, Wrightstown, where she served in many capacities. Her professional career spanned many years working for Fischer and Porter in Warminster and Council Rock Intermediate School-Richboro in the cafeteria. Her real passion and talent was working and teaching young children at Childtown Montessori School, Churchville and Holy Nativity Preschool.
She loved to dance, roller skate, do needle work, crossword puzzles, watch her beloved Phillies and baking desserts for family and friends.
Thelma is survived by her loving children: E. Michael Tanner, Mark W. Tanner and his wife Diane, Benjamin W. Tanner, Gwendolyn T. Gardner, and one sister Betsy Cushman. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Thelma’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 3:00pm until 6:00pm at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, 749 Durham Rd. Newtown PA 18940. Light refreshments will be served in the undercroft featuring Thelma’s favorite desserts.
All are invited to attend Thelma’s Sunset Graveside service at 7:00pm in Union Cemetery 209 Almshouse Rd. Richboro.
In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to Holy Nativity Church at the above address.
