Mary “Gerry” Matthews of Warrington passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Neshaminy Manor Nursing Home in Warrington. She was 83.
Gerry was the beloved wife of the late Warren D. “Matt” Matthews with whom she had shared 46 years of marriage.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Sidney and Mary Gallagher Silk, mother of the late Warren D. “David” Matthews Jr. and sister of the late Anne Silk.
Gerry grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Little Flower High School in 1952. In 1954, she married her beloved Warren and moved to Texas where he was stationed with the US Navy before returning to Philadelphia in 1956. While the children were young, Gerry stayed at home with them and then in 1967 she took a Bank Teller position with Cheltenham Bank at their Warminster branch. She worked there for many years until she was hired as an executive secretary with Honeywell in Ft. Washington where she remained for over 20 years before retiring in 1995.
There was a lot more to Gerry than a hard work ethic. She loved her family, reading, roller skating, dancing, and vacationing at the shore. As a family they vacationed at Wildwood and Avalon where on Sunday nights she would dance to the Big Bands at the Golden Inn.
It really did not matter where she went as long as it was with her husband, Matt. They had a standing date every Saturday night which was followed up Sunday morning with a long and enjoyable drive to no where. They traveled to Ireland, Scotland, and regularly cruised to Bermuda aboard the Holland America ships where they enjoyed dancing every evening. Her never ending zest for life and loving ways will be deeply missed although they continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Rosemarie Biron and her husband, Frank, of Warminster, Gail Ann Pollock and her husband, James, of Lewes, DE and Theresa Crowley and her husband, James of Souderton. She was the loving “Nan” to her 7 grandchildren, David, Nolan, Shane, Danielle, Kevin, Timothy, and Kelly, and her 2 great-grandchildren; Izabella and Abigail.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 9:00 AM until her Funeral Mass 11:00 AM at St. Maria Goretti Church, 1601 Derstine Rd., Hatfield, PA 19440. Her interment will follow in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Women of Hope, 251 North Lawrence Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
