Marie Barbara Subers (nee Wolfinger), age 92, died on Sunday, March 12, 2017 in Yardley, PA.

Marie was born on January 27, 1925 in Bristol Township, Bucks County, PA to Lillian (Singmaster) and Franklin Pierce Wolfinger. She grew up in Edgely, PA with her two sisters, Betty and Lucille, and brothers; Frank, Bill, and Bob. Marie graduated from Bristol High School in 1942 and was an active member of her class reunion committee for many years.

On December 5, 1943, Marie married US Navy Seaman First Class Russell Subers. The wedding was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edgely during a short leave of duty granted Russell by the Navy. Russell served onboard the Destroyer Escort USS Booth and saw action in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific Theaters during WW II.

At the conclusion of war in 1945, the couple purchased property, built a home in Edgely, and soon became members of the Emilie Methodist Church. Russell and Marie had three children: Gary, Todd, and Jenny. In 1963, the family moved to a beautiful home near Newtown, PA that she and Russell designed and built. The family transferred their membership to the Washington Crossing Methodist Church. Later, Marie was pleased to be included as one of the original members of the New Life Christian Church in Newtown when it was formed.

Soon after marrying Russell, Marie worked at Popkin’s Shoe Store on Mill Street in Bristol where she learned about business, customer service, and finance. This experience taught her the skills she would use to start her own business. Inspired by a painting she saw of a canal bridge, she enrolled in oil painting lessons. Marie initially directed her talents at creating paintings; however, her artistic interests soon expanded to include ceramics. In 1958, Marie and Russell opened “The Art Shop”, an artist supply and ceramics business in Edgely. She was active in ceramic shows, taught painting classes, and earned artistic awards. Through her and Russell’s hard work and determination, the Art Shop was very successful, and by 1976, it was clear that the business required a larger facility. She and Russell designed and built a new 10,000 square foot building for the Art Shop on Trenton Road in Levittown, PA and relocated the well-known business there. Over the years, Marie taught and inspired a countless number of people how to discover and express their own creative abilities. Many customers and employees became her life-long friends.

Sadly, in 1992 after 49 years of marriage, Marie lost her husband and best friend, Russell, to cancer. She chose to stay in her home near Newtown and enjoy the things she and Russell built. Marie was happiest when surrounded by her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was thrilled to be called “Great Mommom” by Devin and Kendall Huffman; Christopher and Michael deHaan; and Micah Subers. They always brought her lots of joy and laughter.

Marie is survived by her children – daughter Jenny Subers; son Todd and his wife, Janet (Stoughton); son Gary and his wife, Diane (Krauss); and by her grandchildren – Lori Subers; Kevin Subers and his wife Shannon Smythe; Lisa (Subers) and her husband, Rich Huffman; and Tara (Subers) and her husband, Rob deHaan.

Marie is missed and will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her. A heart felt “Thank You” from Marie’s family to the staff at Sunrise of Lower Makefield for the compassionate and loving care they gave Marie each day.

Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 12:00 PM until her Funeral Service 1:00 PM at the New Life Christian Church, 4 Freedom Drive, in Newtown, PA 18940. The Reverend Dr. Norman J. Leve, Jr. will officiate the service.  Her interment will follow at the Newtown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the New Life Christian Church, at the above address or to a charity of your choice.
