Bernard S. “Bernie” Weinman of Holland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. He was 90.
Bernie was the beloved husband of 57 years to Virginia “Ginny” Pinto Weinman.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Abraham and Rose Schwartzberg Weinman. Bernie served in the army, then went on to receive his B.A. at Brooklyn College and his M.A. and Ph.D. at New York University. He served as Director of the Adolescent Program at Philadelphia State Hospital and was subsequently appointed to head a new department for evaluation and research. As Director of the Clinical Research Department, he lead the development of a successful program to treat, support and reintegrate into the community the chronically mentally ill, who had previously spent years housed at the hospital. The program received a number of federal grants and was presented and implemented abroad.
Bernie treated private patients at the Feasterville Evaluation Center and served as adjunct or assistant professor at Union College, Temple University and Hahnemann University. He also served as consultant for a number of area mental health programs that treated both adults and children.
In addition to his loving wife Ginny, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth Weinman, Deborah Weinman, Leah Weinman, and Amy Sullivan, her husband, Paul, and his grandchildren, Georgia, Joshua, Rhianna, Jason, and Tiana; as well as countless other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, from 10:00 AM until his Funeral Service and a time for sharing and remembrances at 11 AM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.), Richboro, PA. His interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Richboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 30 S. 17th St., Ste. 800, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
