H. Martin Grasmeder, Jr. of Buckingham, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Doylestown Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He has been the beloved husband of Kathleen Burke Grasmeder for 58 years.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Henry Martin and Marguerite McCusker Grasmeder.
A proud member of the US Army, Martin served from 1958-1965 as a Fire Direction Officer. He and his new wife moved to the Doylestown area and “built a home in the country” for his expanding family. He was employed with Philco Corp. in Philadelphia, working with a high level of clearance in Intelligence for private contractors in the US Government. While he saw many acquisition changes that took him to California, it was family that brought him back to the Doylestown area once again. His retirement in 2000 from Lockheed Martin allowed him to enjoy his wife, family and friends.
He loved his boat “The Reel Adventure” and his vacation home and friends in Beach Haven West, NJ. Travelling with his wife and family was a priority and he proudly visited 5 of the 7 continents with his wife, Kathy. He also enjoyed ocean, ice and fly-fishing. He was an avid, and even sometimes successful, beer brewer.
Serving as the family historian, he was a history fanatic and researched his own family’s genealogy back to the 1400’s. One of his greatest joys was the annual Ocean City, NJ family reunion, a family tradition that allowed the Grasmeder and Burke clans as well as their dear friends an opportunity to share time together.
He sang for years as a bass vocalist with the church choir and performed throughout Europe as part of the group. Two of his favorite songs were “I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen” and the “Hallelujah Chorus”.
He served as a Sacristan and attended church daily at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and eventually Our Lady of Guadalupe in Doylestown. He was an active member of AOH, Knights of Columbus, Doylestown Civic War Round Table and monthly luncheons of the LaSalle College High School Class of 1954.
In addition to his wife, Kathleen, he is survived by his loving children and their spouses, H. Martin and Lee Draper; Elizabeth Ann Grasmeder-Smith and Kirk Smith; Michael James Grasmeder; Daniel Joseph and Kathleen Grasmeder and James Martin and Carrie Grasmeder. He will be missed by his special grandchildren: Nichole, Andrew, Danielle, Gabrielle, Sullivan, Brynn and Claire; his brother John Grasmeder, and his sister Sandra McDade. He considered himself fortunate to have a very close relationship with his brother and sister-in-law, James and Eileen and their family.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Friday, Jan. 20 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 East Butler Ave. (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901, and on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 5175 Cold Spring Creamery Rd., Doylestown, PA 18901 from 9:30am until the start of his Funeral Mass, 10:30am. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Doylestown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ruth Boland Nursing Scholarship; 595 West State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 in honor of the care that Martin was given in his final days.
