Josephine E. McDevitt, of New Hope, died peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Doylestown Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was 89.
She was the beloved wife of 62 years to the late Frederick J. McDevitt.
Born in Philadelphia she was the daughter of the late Edward Stickel and Josephine (Rachfalski) Petitt.
Josephine graduated from Jules E. Mastbaum Area Vocational Technical School and led a long career as a secretary for the Sinclair Oil Company, which eventually became BP Oil, from where she retired. She also worked at the Frankford Arsenal during World War II.
Josephine was a long time resident of the Village of Buckingham Springs and devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doylestown. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed countless outings with the bowling group from Buckingham Springs. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards, and traveling along with her fellow residents. Josephine adored Cape May, NJ and Disneyworld, both of which were her more recent favorite travel destinations.
Josephine will be greatly missed and most remembered as a generous, caring and selfless mother and grandmother who placed everyone’s needs above her own.
Surviving are her daughters; Josephine M. Samsel and her husband Philip of Yardley and Sister Mary McDevitt C.S. F. N. of Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Jodi Samsel, Dr. Kate Samsel, Amy Samsel and Philip Samsel Jr; and her brother, William Petitt.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Petitt.
Relatives, friends and religious are invited to attend her viewing on Monday, January 9, 2017 from 10:30am until her Funeral Mass 11:30am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 5175 Cold Spring Creamery Road, Doylestown, PA 18902. Josephine’s interment will follow in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to Nazareth Academy High School Family Fund, 4001 Grant Ave. Phila PA 19114.
