Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Hirschmann, of Doylestown, died peacefully with her loving family by her side on June 13, 2016, at Pine Run Health Center. She was 77.
Betty was the much beloved and devoted wife of James W. Hirschmann, Jr., to whom she was married for 56 years.
Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Betty was the daughter of the late Edward and Madeline Michel Murray.
She was a 1957 graduate of Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls and was an active member of the Alumni Association. After marrying James in 1959, they moved to Warminster, PA where they raised their eight beautiful children. She was a dedicated member of the Nativity of Our Lord Church and School, and a committed volunteer at Archbishop Wood High School and within the local community. She was devoted to helping children with special needs at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit.
Betty’s greatest passion was always her large and loving family and her circle of close friends. Betty was immensely proud of her family and valued every moment spent with them, from the Jersey shore to the South of France. After retirement, she and Jim split their time between Pennsylvania and Southern California.
For over 50 years, she and her friends participated in a monthly card club, and, until her final days, she loved a good crossword puzzle or word game. As busy as she was raising eight children, Betty always made guests at the Hirschmann home feel warmly welcomed. An avid supporter of all of her children’s sports and other activities, Betty could always be found at her sons’ football games at the youth, high school and college level yelling, “Get ‘em!” Later in life, that same enthusiasm continued as she supported and followed her 19 grandchildren’s activities.
In addition to her devoted husband, Betty is survived by her eight children: James W. Hirschmann III and his wife Laura of Manhattan Beach, CA; Paul Hirschmann and his wife Meg of Sugar Hill, GA; Stephen Hirschmann of Washington Crossing, PA; Thomas Hirschmann and his wife Terri of Edgewater, MD; Karen Roschetz and her husband Bill of North Wales, PA; Michael Hirschmann and his wife Michele of Chalfont, PA; Beth Ann Hirschmann of Hermosa Beach, CA and Brian Hirschmann and his wife Katie of Bensalem, PA. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren: Jimmy, Samantha, Emily, Will, Joe, Paul, Robby, Stephen, Michael, Luke, Colin, Grace, Olivia, Anamae, Lauren, Natalie, Liam, Ella and Ava.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Tuesday, June 21, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 East Butler Ave., (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901. Her Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 22 at 12:30 PM at St. Cyril of Jerusalem, 1410 Almshouse Road, Jamison, PA 18929. Her interment will follow at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The Elizabeth Murray Hirschmann Scholarship at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, 1000 W. Lycoming St, Philadelphia, PA 19140. www.littleflowerhighschool.org/?task=cc_donations
