James J. McVeigh, of Holland and formerly of Philadelphia, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at St. Mary Medical Center. He was 89.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Harry and Nellie Gormley McVeigh.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 65 years, Gloria A. Stransinger McVeigh, and his brother Harry McVeigh, Jr.

Jim was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served our country during World War II overseas. Upon his return, he then began his lifelong career as a dispatcher for Mack Trucks and Sears (Signal).

Jim loved baseball, was a diehard Phillies fan, and an eternal optimist about his favorite team’s outcomes. He played baseball in high school, and in later years coached for St. Joseph’s Prep. Until his mid 60’s, he played in a Senior Softball league in Philadelphia.

He was a member of the Irish American String Band well into his 70’s, and participated in the Mummers Parade as a Marshall, providing assistance with props, banners, and equipment.

Jim had the great fortune to enjoy good health well into his later years. Although recently he had some challenges with his health, he was always in good spirits, enjoyed his family, and his time spent with his friends at Twining Village. His family is very grateful for the care provided by the Healthcare Staff and wonderful nurses during his illness. He will be dearly missed.

Jim is survived by his children: James J. McVeigh of Denver, CO, Thomas P. McVeigh and his wife Kathleen Ganley of Chester Springs, PA, Gloria M. McVeigh of Bethlehem, PA, and Anne M. McVeigh of Newtown, PA; and his grandchildren: Samantha Wilson and her husband Dan, Brian J. and his wife Jenny, and Meghan G. McVeigh.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 10:00am until his Funeral Mass at 11:00am in St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Rd., Holland, PA 18966.

Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Twining Village, C/O Don Prifti, Wellness Coordinator, 280 Middle Holland Rd., Holland, PA 18966.
