Evelyn R. Johnson of Doylestown, Pa., formerly of Bernardsville, N.J. and Flat Rock, N.C., passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015. She was 90.

She was born in 1924, in Long Island, N.Y. and was the daughter of the late Ann and George Reimers.

Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Kean University in New Jersey, receiving both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in English. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. She was a certified Braillist for the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

She retired from the Bernardsville N.J. Board of Education before moving to Flat Rock, N.C. in 1987, with her husband, Oke I. Johnson.

She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville, served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the Daughters of the King, and was a Lay Eucharistic minister.

She served on the Board of Trustees of Historic Flat Rock, Inc., the Board of Directors of the American Association of University Women, the Board of Directors of the Supporting Players of Flat Rock Playhouse, and the Board of Directors of Four Seasons Arts Council.

She was a Life Master of American Contact Bridge League and played at the Opportunity House in Hendersonville. She loved the game of Bridge and tried to play every day, sometimes more often!

In Kenmure, Mrs. Johnson was the organizer and first editor of the Kenmure Newsletter, and organizer of the Welcome Committee. She was president of the Women’s Nine Holer’s Golf Committee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oke I. Johnson; her sister, Harriet Christmann; and her beloved Golden Retriever, Sonja.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Carol DeJarnette of Florida; Judy Tsuma, and her husband, Rodney of Arizona; Oke I. Johnson Jr., and his wife, JV of Colorado; and Amy, and her husband, Rick of Doylestown. Her grandchildren, Kim, Oke III, Kari, Sam and Anna; her great-grandchildren, Annika Evelyn and Oke IV; and two nephews, Eugene Christmann and his family, and Jon Christmann also survive her.
