Verna L. Shelmire, of Doylestown, died peacefully on Monday, October 25, 2010, at Doylestown Hospital. She was 89.

            She was the beloved wife of 69 years to Curwen S. Shelmire.

Born in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Warner and Margaret P. Mills Leedom.

Verna was a resident of Heritage Towers in Doylestown for the past 17 years. She was raised on the family farm in Dolington and graduated from Washington Crossing Elementary School and Newtown High School. 

In 1941 Verna and Curwen moved to their first farm in Ivyland, where they grew carrots and tomatoes for Campbell Soup Company. In 1963, they moved from that farm (which is now the home of Spring Mill Country Club) and moved to Churchville.  Then from 1963 to 1986, they lived on their farm in Churchville where again they grew vegetables in addition to raising poultry which they sold locally.

Verna was a woman with many talents. She loved to sew and was very creative with a needle and thread. She also liked to play cards, read and was been a long time member of the Davisville Church in Southampton. Her most favorite pleasure and talent was cooking and entertaining for her family.

In addition to her beloved husband , she is survived by her devoted  daughters Evelyn S. Vanderloo and her husband Robert of Delaware and Nancy S. Woodward and her husband William of Richboro, she is also survived by her  4 dear grandchildren: Linda, Terri, Robert and Scott and 5 great grandchildren: Michael, Steven, Bethany, Sydney and Carter.

Family and friends from Heritage Towers are invited to attend her viewing Thursday October 28, 2010 from 10:00 am until her Funeral Service 11:00 am at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home 241 E. Butler Ave. (Rt.202 & Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Feasterville, PA

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Doylestown Hospital, 595 West State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
