Robert Stanley Hevner of Doylestown, PA died peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at Doylestown Hospital. He was 77.
He was the beloved husband of Barbara J. Allen Hevner, to whom he was married for over 38 years.
Born on December 9, 1932 in Trenton, NJ, he was the son of the late George H. and Margaret S. Harrison Hevner.
Bob grew up and lived the first 30 years of his life in New York City. After attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Bob went on to graduate from The City College of New York in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served honorably in the United States Coast Guard.
In 1964, Bob moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco where he met and married his wife, Barbara. After spending two years back in New York City, Bob and his wife moved to Doylestown in 1974 where he was a borough resident for over 36 years.
Bob was active in many local organizations, most notably a founding member and past president of the Bucks Co. Civil War Round Table. A man of numerous interests, above all he was a lover of history and an avid reader who enjoyed long discussions on almost any subject.
During his time on the West Coast, Bob became an enthusiastic hiker and an admirer of the grandeur of nature, often attempting to capture it in photographs. The many trails he walked included hikes to the top of Mt. Whitney and the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
Together, Bob and Barbara traveled extensively throughout the 50 United States and to many countries around the world. Always curious, Bob never settled for the guided tour, instead always seeking out the hidden treasures and back roads of those places he visited.
After college Bob pursued a career in engineering that for many years included work in power generation and large scale manufacturing operations. While living in California, he gained a deep appreciation for good wine, which Bob often enjoyed sharing with his friends and family. This led him on to an interest in the actual production of wine, and a second career in the wine industry which lasted until his retirement.
In addition to his loving wife, Bob is survived by his two sons, Dr. Robert F. Hevner, and his wife, Karin, of North Bend, WA and John P. Hevner of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his “perfect” granddaughter, Sophia Grace Hevner.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday evening, November 19, 2010, from 6 to 8 PM at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 E. Butler Avenue (Route 202 & Sandy Ridge Road), New Britain, PA 18901 and to his Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 20, 2010, 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. Interment will follow at Doylestown Cemetery, Doylestown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church at the above address or to the Yosemite Conservancy at www.yosemiteconservancy.org/gifts-memory.
