Jane Mevey McIntosh Black, beloved mother, passed away on December 29, 2010 due to natural causes. She was eighty-nine years old.
Born in Sewickley, PA on November 1, 1921, she grew up on “The Hill” in Glen Osborne. She went to boarding school at Chatham Hall in Virginia and attended Smith College, where she studied vocal music. She left college in her senior year when her first husband was posted to Florida for WWII.
Her love of music continued through her life. She sang in the church choir for over 70 years. She was active in several performing groups including the Pittsburgh Savoyards and the 8:40 group at the Edgeworth Club. When not performing, Jane was on the board of directors of the Woman’s Association of the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Child Health Association of Sewickley and the Deacon board of The Presbyterian Church of Sewickley.
Jane enjoyed knitting and gardening. For several years she kept a vegetable garden, a cutting garden, a rose garden and a perennial border. She was an excellent cook, making homemade soups and breads.
Through a mutual friend at church, she met her second husband, Alexander Black. During their 44 years together, Jane and Alex enjoyed many trips. One of the events which they never missed was Alex’s class reunions at Princeton University. Princeton reunions became family reunions once the children left home. Jane and Alex attended the Princeton vs. Harvard football game every year, always wearing orange and black to support the Princeton team.
She is survived by her children (Kris Hoeveler, Kenneth Black, and Elizabeth Watson), 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services and Interment will be announced at a future date in time. Donations may be made in the name of Jane Black to the Child Health Association of Sewickley (ChildHealthAssociation.org) or the Union Aid Society (UnionAidSociety.org).
