Charles S. Briggs, of Richboro, died on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at home with his family by his side. He was 94.
He was the beloved husband of 69 years to Muriel Martin Briggs.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Esther Shallcross Briggs and twin brother of the late Ernest Briggs.
Charlie has been a resident of Richboro, for over 60 years. He grew up in Olney and was proud to have been a Boy Scout. He worked hard to become an Eagle Scout in troop 203, Philadelphia. After graduating from Olney High School in 1935, he went on to graduate from Drexel University in 1941 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
A proud and decorated veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Captain in the 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. He received 2 Bronze Stars, five battle stars, and several other honors for meritorious service to his country. In 1945 he began a long and rewarding career with Rohm and Haas Company at their Bridesburg Plant in Philadelphia, until his retirement in 1977 as Plant Engineer and Maintenance Supervisor.
Charlie was a member of the Professional Engineers Society, the Warminster VFW Post 6493, Douglas A. Post / Harry C. Wilson, II, Memorial Post, and life long member and former Deacon and Elder of the Addisville Reformed Church in Richboro. He not only gave his time and talents to his church but also to his community, serving as a life member and former officer of the Northampton Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Northampton Township Zoning Board for 6 years, where he served as Chairman, and a 7 year term on the Northampton Township Supervisors board, 6 as the Chairman.
Charlie loved to fish, and work in his wood shop. He was a man of his word and could be counted on to help anyone anywhere at anytime. After retiring, he and his wife volunteered full time at a church affiliated school in Brewton, Alabama for 5 years. He will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by his 4 sons; John C., James M., Thomas R., and David A. Briggs, his 2 sisters; Marjorie Ellis, and Virginia “Ginny” Geyer. He is also survived by his 3 dear grandchildren; John, Charles and Russell, and 3 great grandchildren; John, Shane and Samantha.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Sunday evening April 10, 2011, from 6:00 — 8:00 pm at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro and on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 2:00 pm until his Funeral Service 3:00 pm at the Addisville Reformed Church, 945 Second St. Pike, Richboro, PA 18954. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Richboro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Addisville Reformed Church, at the above address.
