Charles O. Schmidt, 95, a World War II combat veteran of the 4th Armored Division, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2011.

He was the beloved husband of Helen (Wachter) Schmidt, his wife of 61 years, and proud father of Charles Schmidt and his significant other Kathy Zeiss of Newtown.

Born in Philadelphia, residing in Feasterville, Ivyland, Ottsville and Doylestown, he was a talented musician and gifted operatic tenor. He performed at many venues including the opening acts with such greats as Milton Berle, Joe E. Lewis and Orson Wells, as well as performing weekly live radio broadcasts.

Although he sang, played the violin, guitar, and organ, his proudest accomplishment was his service to his country, 1940-1946. Called to service with the first draftees in 1940, Charles went on to serve with the Fourth Armored Division, 66th Field Artillery. Attached to Patton’s Third Army, the 4th Armored Division (“Patton’s Best”) spearheaded the drive across France, raced to Bastogne to play a crucial role in the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine, battled through Germany, and liberated Ohrdruf Concentration Camp. For the outstanding accomplishments, the entire Division received the Presidential Bronze Star.

After returning to civilian life, Charles continued his association with the Fourth Armored Division --serving as president of its Philadelphia-Delaware Valley Chapter, where he is fondly remembered for his many poignant newsletters to his fellow comrades. A gifted storyteller, Charles delighted in sharing his penchant for history with every audience.

A devoted husband and father, Charles was an avid reader, an avid football fan, and a loyal fan of “his Phillies”.

Imbued with a fighting spirit, Charles lived life to its fullest. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his patriotism and strength of character.

Private interment will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.

If so desired, contributions to any Veteran’s Support Group would be appreciated by the family.
