Dorothy S. Howarth died peacefully in her sleep, in her Doylestown home, on Saturday morning, July 2nd, 2011. She was 95.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Edna Swift and beloved wife of the late George A. Howarth who died in March. She lived in Philadelphia, where in 1935 she met her future husband at a church dance. Dorothy and George were married in January of 1942, hours before his deployment overseas.

During World War II, while her husband was in North Africa and Italy, Dorothy worked and volunteered her time, serving the war effort in several downtown Philadelphia hospitals.

After the war, she and her husband became entrepreneurs, owning and operating a Scotch, English and Irish imported food store, at Front and Allegheny Avenues. After more than 27 years of operation, they sold their business to pursue a more leisurely lifestyle. She worked part time for an insurance office in northeast Philadelphia and did volunteer work at a local nursing home.

Dorothy loved traveling, and throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s enjoyed extended road-trips with her family through the American southwest, exploring back-roads, and visiting the various National Parks and Monuments. In the following years, she and her husband enjoyed the Gulf Coast of Florida, especially Anna Marie Island. She had numerous interests and on her creative side, she dappled in oil painting and watercolors.

Dorothy is survived by her children, George Howarth and his wife Susan of New Mexico and Lawrence Howarth and his wife Virginia of Doylestown. She is also survived by her three loving grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2100 York Rd. Jamison PA 18929, on Tuesday July 19th at 11:30 AM, where her family will receive condolences from 10:30am until her services. Interment for Dorothy, along with her recently deceased husband George, will be conducted with military honors at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Howarth's name may be made to the Doylestown Medical Associates, Suite 2 South, 301 South Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
