Helen Fay Lovett died on August 28, 2011 at Pennswood Village, Newtown, PA, just a few days past her 88th birthday.
Helen was the beloved wife of the late Robert Pitfield Lovett IV, daughter of the late Mabel Grant Fay and Robert Charles Fay and sister of the late Robert Charles Fay Jr., Frederic Buckley Fay, and Edward Grant Fay.
She was born in River Forest, IL, grew up in Holyoke, MA and resided for 43 years in Upper Makefield Township. Helen and Bob were married for 62 years and moved to Pennswood Village in 1993.
Helen graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1946 and received her Masters in Library Science from Rutgers University in 1969. In addition to serving as librarian at Newtown Friends School and George School, her professional career included 17 years with the Bucks County Free Library as Adult Extension Librarian. Among her significant achievements there was the oversight and delivery of the county’s first long-range planning documents—a blueprint for the library’s future growth. Its success paved the way for other Pennsylvania libraries to undertake this process.
Helen’s Quaker beliefs remained important to her throughout her life. She was an active member of Newtown Friends Meeting, and after retirement focused on her work with The Peace Center in Langhorne. Helen contributed her organizational capabilities and forward thinking to help The Peace Center train staff and bring conflict resolution and mediation into schools throughout the Delaware Valley.
Helen and Bob loved to read, travel, and spend time with family and friends. Helen spent several decades researching both Lovett and Grant family genealogies, traveling to England and Scotland to visit ancestral homelands.
Helen is survived by her children, Robert P. Lovett V and his partner Ann Buckley of Newtown, PA, Laura E. Lovett of Larkspur, CA, and Sarah Ann Lovett of New Paltz, NY; by her brother-in-law William J. Lovett and wife Elizabeth Sanger of Visalia, CA; and by sisters-in-law Florence Fay of Springfield, MA and Hazel Lovett of Newtown, PA.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court Street, Newtown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The Peace Center, 102 W. Maple Ave., Langhorne, PA 19047 or Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court Street, PO Box 224, Newtown, PA 18940.
