Robert James Armstrong of Doylestown, PA, formerly of Whippany, NJ and Flemington, NJ, died peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Pine Run Health Care. He was 89.

Born in Newark, NJ, on April 21, 1922, to the late Peter and Annie Armstrong, Robert was predeceased by his brothers, William and Peter Armstrong and his sisters, Anna Hogan, Alice Groves and Mary Clark.

He attended school in Newark, NJ, and served in the US Army during World War II and landed at Normandy Beach. He worked at Elastic Stop Nut, Union, NJ for 25 years. He lived in Union, NJ, Whippany, NJ and moved to Flemington, NJ to be with his family. He was a volunteer with the Union Fire Department, the Callmen’s First Aid Squad, Triboro First Aid Squad, Seaside Park, NJ and volunteered with the Morristown Memorial Hospital, receiving a 500 hours of service award. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Maplewood, NJ and Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany, NJ, where he was an usher for many years. He also attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Three Bridges, NJ.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife, Madelyn Helmstetter Armstrong who he married on Nov. 17, 1945. They just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. He is the proud dad of Barbara (Curt) Fuko of Pittsboro, NC and Linda (Edward) Burger of Flemington, NJ. He is the loving grandfather of Tracy Burger (Pete Delgado), Lisa (Anthony) DeFazio, Julie (Kirk) Eisenbeil, Sarah (Ryan) Garbolino, Kristin (Anthony) Pisch, Curtis Fuko and Michael (Eric Rizzo) Fuko. He was so proud to be the great grandpa to 14 great grandchildren, Luke, Hailey Rose, Samuel DeFazio, Caleb, Camryn, Cassidy, Colby Eisenbeil, Ella Grace Garbolino, Ryan, Lindsay Pisch, Andrew Bucknam, Jessica, Kaitlyn, and Justin Fuko.

Robert loved the Yankees, he was so proud of his WWII service and most of all he loved his wife and family. We will miss him. He was a wonderful man.

Robert’s family will receive condolences on Thursday, February 23, 2012 from 8:30 am until his memorial mass at 9:30 am at St. Jude Church, 321 West Butler Avenue, Chalfont, PA 18914.

Interment will follow in Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA at 11:30 am.

Donations may be sent to the Veterans Association in Robert’s name.
