William F. Gunst, of Holland, died peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2012, at the home of his daughter. He was 91.
He was the beloved husband of 62 years to the late Agnes T. Mitchell Gunst. Born in New York, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary Crosby Gunst and brother of the late Veronica, Grace and Marie and half brother to the late Robert and Ernest Gunst.
Bill was a most recent resident of Twining Village; Bill was raised in Bethlehem, PA., by his dearest Aunts, Gertrude and Katherine from the age of 5 after his mother’s death. He was formerly a long time active resident of Ridley Park. In 1942, Bill joined the United States Army and fought in World War II, he was a Sergeant in General Patton’s Third Army, 4th Armored Division in the European Theater, fighting in 5 campaigns, relieving Bastogne in December,1944, liberating Ohrdruf, work/prison camp and remaining with that unit through the end of the war in occupied Germany.
After returning from the war, Bill had a long and illustrious career in the hotel business in Philadelphia. He worked at the John Bartram Hotel and was notably the manager of the Drake Hotel and Comptroller of the Penn Center Inn. He retired in 1984. Bill was very patriotic and was proud to be an American and always flew the Flag that he fought so hard for during World War II. He will be sadly missed by his devoted family and friends.
Bill is survived by his devoted children; Margaret M. (Mimi) Palkovics and her husband Louis of Holland, Patricia Simon and her husband John of Dallas TX, William L. Gunst and his wife Mary of Vienna VA, Teresa Laucks and here husband Gary of York PA, his sister Evelyn Nielsen of Idaho. He is also survived by his 13 dear grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Bill’s family will receive condolences on Saturday March 17, 2012 from 10:00am until his Funeral Mass 11:00am at the Church of St. Andrew, 81 Swamp Rd., Newtown.
Private Interment with Military honors will take place at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Delaware County PA.
In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, for Outreach to Haiti and Dawns Place c/o 1750 Quarry Rd. Yardley PA 19067
