Kevin George Hylind

June 13th, 2017

Kevin George Hylind passed away in his home, his castle, on June 13th, 2017, at the age of 66; knowing in his heart that he was appreciated and deeply loved by his family. He was the proud grandfather to Elkin, Jordan, Olivia, Nicolas, Amelia, Griffin, Lola, Wyatt, Graham, Tavner, Allegra, Beckett, and Calista.

His grandchildren were his inspiration and the light of his life. His love for them was and always will be reciprocated. All of the grand kids could not wait to see Grandpa to get great big bear hugs, bags of gifts and candy, and giggles from his tickles. He proudly built an industrial-sized swing set for his grandkids with his own two hands. He was very excited most recently about installing a large, ornate tree swing, with two inch thick wood and hand-braided colorful ropes for the kids use in his backyard.

He had impeccable attention to detail. He was always customizing his home, and making grand plans for new projects. He was very proud that he replaced the entire roof with architectural shingles using his own two hands. He was brilliant and had an incredibly creative mind. He had many visions for beautiful home projects and plans to come. He was mechanically inclined and a jack of all trades;he could repair or build anything. He had a passion for documenting family events through pictures, and always had a camera in his hand. He enjoyed working on cars, collecting antiques, and personalizing gifts for his family, friends, and grandchildren. He was meticulous about cutting his grass and trimming his hedges to perfection. Each spring, he would drop everything, and drive hours just to spend time with his mom and trim every hedge around her house.

He as the beloved son of Mary J. and the late Commander Kenneth G. Hylind, USN. As the son of a naval officer, he lived in NY, CA, CT, RI, MA and Cuba. He played baseball for the Wrens as a catcher in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and was a dance champion in R, was a Boy Scout in Bethesda where he won the AD Altari Dei Award and was a Life Scout.

He graduated from St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda, Maryland and St. John's College High School in Washington and attended the University of Maryland. He is survived by one sister Eileen; six brothers: Paul (Lydia), Mark (Nancy), Kenneth (Linda), William (Tricia), James (Amy) and John (Agnes). He was predeceased by his brother George in 1984. He is also survived by his loving children: Mary (Elkin), Kenneth (Amy), Kevin (Shannon), Carolann, Sean and Katie (Juan). He was the very proud grandfather of 13 amazing grandchildren, He is also survived by two Aunts: Johanna Albani, Boca Raton, FL, Carol Ann Grant, Dayton, MD, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He loved, respected and always honored his father, mother, sister and brothers.

He moved from Bethesda, Maryland to the Philadelphia area in 1969, building a large family of six children with his former wife Kathy; three boys and three girls: Mary, Kenny, Kevin, Carolann, Sean and Katie. He worked most of his life as a Master Printer in Philadelphia. In retirement he enjoyed the friendships he made as a part-time driver for FedEx. He worked tirelessly all of his life to place his family in the best town and school district; and to provide a stress-free life for them. He never missed a single event for any of his children or grandchildren, regardless of distance or time constraints. He was extremely proud of his children as they grew into adulthood. He continued to pour out his love and support unconditionally, no questions asked. If any of his children needed him for any reason, his first response was always "We will work it out, hun." His sense of humor, wittiness, creativity and tenacity will live in our hearts forever.

Dad would have wanted us to laugh a little bit right now. He would have likely gathered us together to get a picture, saying, "Muwahaha!" to get everyone to laugh and smile, knowing that it worked every time. It would then be followed by, "Come on, make-believe you're happy!"

Thank you for the best and tightest bear hugs of our life. You were the most amazing grandfather any child could ever ask for. Your love for your children, family, and friends was unwavering. We love you and miss you so much, dad. Thank you for all that you did, from the bottom of our hearts. We love you. We love you. We love you.
