Daniel Lawler

December 27th, 2018

Dan Lawler, the creator and artist of hundreds of Humpty Dumpty magazine covers, Readers Digest cartoons, and other illustrations and portraits, passed away Thursday, December 27th at age 100.  His son Tom Lawler and daughter-in-law Karen Lawler are long-time residents of Richboro.

Dan was a scholarship graduate of the Minneapolis School of Art.  He won a fellowship to study in New York City with a master portraitist.  His studies were interrupted by World War II where he was deployed with the Army to the European Theater.  He landed on Utah Beach on D-Day and fought in the Normandy campaign as a recon platoon sergeant.  While on a scouting mission, months after D-Day, his whole patrol was ambushed, and Dan was wounded and taken prisoner.  He survived a prisoner of war column heading east towards Germany.  His German captors, whom Dad later praised for their mercy, deposited Dad and other wounded soldiers in the town of Tournai, Belgium, where the townspeople treated their wounds and provided shelter for them.

Dan was later transferred to the VA hospital at Battle Creek, Michigan.  His young wife Jeanne joined him there and they were inseparable ever afterwards.  Dan and Jeanne were long-time residents of Centerport, L.I., N.Y.  They celebrated their 50th anniversary there in 1993.  Jeanne died of Parkinson’s disease at Chandler Hall in Newtown in 2003.

Dan was a long-time artist for Parents Magazine in New York City.  He loved art and he loved the Great City.  Dan had great charm, imagination, and skill.  There was little that he could not create to entertain his beloved wife, children, relatives, grandchildren, and friends, from personalized, humorous anniversary cards every June 18th to rope swings and rocking horses for the children.

Dan and Jeanne are survived by their dearly loved children:  Dan Jr., Tom, Mark, and Kathy.  They are also survived by their 11 grandchildren, whom they also loved and enjoyed entertaining with their charm and good spirits.  Among Dan's local grandchildren are Gretchen Jonas of Furlong and Gavin Lawler of Collegeville.

Dan’s family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2018 from 12 noon until his Funeral Service at 1:30PM in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Gregory S. Kopenhaver, Sr.

December 25th, 2018

Gregory Kopenhaver, Sr. of Southampton, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final weeks. He was 67 years old.

Greg will be heavily missed by his true love of 49 years, Trudy (Schaeffer) Kopenhaver.

Born in Abington, he was the son of Edith Kopenhaver and the late Harold Kopenhaver. He was a retired Philadelphia police officer who operated the family painting business that was started with his father. He also owned and managed various rental properties which kept him busy and active in his later years.

Greg had an outgoing personality and loved meeting people. He spent most of his time on Long Beach Island where he was seen “patrolling” his Brant Beach neighborhood, making friends and checking on neighbors. Local residents referred to him as the “Mayor of Brant Beach”. He was proactive in the community and was a common fixture at the local township building and meetings where he was the self-described “squeaky wheel”. Because of his continued involvement, the township recently dedicated a neighborhood beautification project in his honor and named it the Kopenhaver Promenade! This was truly a special moment for him.

Greg’s biggest passion was his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at the shore, and was always available to “supervise” any family activities or projects. He also enjoyed fishing and spent many weekends on the boat with his son and grandsons chasing striped bass and various species along the coast. He and Trudy enjoyed time at their bay house, eating out at local restaurants and the “occasional” trip to the casinos.

In addition to his loving wife Trudy, he is survived by his mother, Edith Kopenhaver; his siblings, Brent Kopenhaver and his wife Emilie, LuAnn Vanaman and her husband Olin, Thomas Hartzell and his wife, Barbara; his children, Gregory Kopenhaver, Jr. and his wife Lori, Kimberly Rothstein and her husband, Michael; and his grandchildren, Madison, Michael, Gregory and Matthew.

Greg’s family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 11:00am until his Life Tribute at 12:30pm, at the Joseph A. Fluehr, III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown Richboro Rd., Richboro, PA 18954. A luncheon will follow. His interment will take place privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, PO Box 1000; Dept. 147 in Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
