Joseph W. Zimmerman

October 25th, 2016

Joseph W. Zimmerman, of Harleysville, PA died on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Grand View Hospital, Sellersville. He was 82.

He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Genevieve Yodesky Zimmerman.

Born and raised in Glenside, he was the son of the late Harry and late Anna Clark Zimmerman.

Joe grew up in Glenside and after graduating from Abington High School began working and soon after that he met his beloved Genevieve. They married in 1956 and five months later, like many men during that era, was drafted and entered the US Army. He proudly served his country and was stationed in Ft. Gordon, Georgia. After his honorable discharge, they returned to Pennsylvania in 1959. Upon returning Joe began his career in construction industry and joined the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542. Like many he started as a mechanic and moved his way up to a heavy equipment operator. After many years as a successful operator it became apparent that Joe’s communication and leadership skills would be best served in the classroom as mentor and instructor to those entering the profession.

Fortunately, these teaching skills were not constrained to his work. He shared them with the community by participating in the Glenside Youth Athletic Club as a coach for his children and others who played football, baseball and basketball in addition to coaching the Bishop McDevitt Football team.

Joe had many passions and he was blessed to have the talent and energy to back it up. It didn’t matter if it was golf, fishing, bowling, racing dirt track cars, gardening or cooking, if he was going to do it, he would give nothing less than 110%. If he set his mind to it, nothing would stop him from reaching the highest level. He was a great example to many and will lovingly be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, teacher, leader, teammate and friend.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his three children Barbara Curran and her husband Christopher of Lebanon, NJ, Stephen Zimmerman and his wife Cheryl of Perkiomenville, and Kim Brown of Chalfont, his brother Albert Zimmerman of West Palm Beach and his sister Anna VanArtsdalen of Doylestown. He is also survived by his two grandchildren; Grace and Michael Curran. He was predeceased by his son in law Charles Brown.

His family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 10:00 AM until his Funeral Mass 11:00 AM at St. Jude Church, 321 West Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA 18914. His interment will follow in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory should be made to St. Jude Church, at the above address.
